History

The United Services Automobile Association was founded in 1922 when 25 army officers got together to insure each other’s cars. Army members were considered high insurance risks at the time. The company’s name was originally United States Army Automobile Association, but changed in 1924 to United Services Automobile Association when other U.S. military officers finally became eligible for membership. That same year, the company’s slogan, “Service to the Services” was born.

USAA’s focus on service has endured since it was founded. It was a pioneer for direct marketing, conducting most business via mail until the 1960s. Today, USAA mostly operates on line and over the phone. It offers its 10.3 million members other financial services as well, such as life insurance and banking services. USAA is consistently ranked as one of the top companies in America for customer service, regardless of industry.
