History

MetLife was founded in 1863 by a group of New York City businessmen. However, it did not assume the name MetLife Insurance until 1868. The company began by insuring Civil War soldiers against disabilities brought about by the war. This was not as successful as expected. Five years into business, President James R. Dow decided to drop the casualty business and focus more on life insurance. From there, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company was in full force.

In the late 1870s, President Joseph F. Knapp brought agents over from England to train the American agency force. He believed using British methods would help the company crawl out of a severe business depression. He was right: by 1900, MetLife was signing up 700 new industrial policies a day.

Today, MetLife continues to help its customers create their “own personal safety net,” as the website writes. They are helping millions of customers do so. And they're doing it upon the same principles they used to drive their business to success many years before.
