History

Erie Insurance was founded in 1925 by H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford in Erie, Pennsylvania. After three years in business, Erie expanded to a second office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At first, the company started out only offering auto insurance. But it later added fire insurance to its inventory in 194, followed by inland marine insurance in 1954.

The Pioneer HomeProtector Program was introduced as Erie’s first homeowners policy in the early 1960s. By the end of the decade the company had added life insurance, too. By 1977, Erie was the largest auto insurer in the state of Pennsylvania.

In the last five years, Erie Insurance has hit many milestones as a company. It was named one of the Top 40 Customer Service Champions by J.D. Power and Associates in 2011. Forbes Magazine called it one of America’s most trustworthy companies in 2014. In 2015, Erie celebrated having five million policies and its 90th year in business.

Claims Process

Once you file a claim with Erie, several steps will follow:
Your claim is assigned a number and then presented to a claims rep.

  1. The claims rep will then assess whether your incident is a simple or complex auto insurance loss. A simple loss is often settled fast, and entails a towed vehicle or windshield damage. A complex loss, however, can take a bit longer if other parties are involved. A liability adjuster will also be assigned to your claim to further assess the damages.
  2. The claims adjuster or handler will monitor the claim’s progress to ensure the process is quick and smooth.
