History

A.T. Vigneron started Amica in 1907 in Providence, Rhode Island. At first, Amica was organized as a mutual insurance company, owned by policyholders instead of stockholders. At that time, it offered only auto, fire, and theft insurance. Later in the century it added homeowners, marine, and personal excess liability insurance. In 1970, Amica also began selling life insurance under Amica Life Insurance.

Today, Amica is based in Lincoln, Rhode Island, and it is a direct writer of personal insurance. It is well known for its financial strength as well as for having great customer service. Also, Amica is the oldest mutual insurer of cars in the United States.
