History

Travelers is one of the oldest insurance companies in the world. Founded in 1864 in Hartford, Connecticut, it was originally supposed to provide insurance for railroad passengers, hence the name “Travelers.” In 2004, the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company merged with Travelers, thus becoming The St. Paul Travelers Company Inc. Finally in February 2007, the name changed to Travelers Companies Inc.

Throughout its history, Travelers has accomplished many firsts for the insurance industry. It was the first company to sell auto insurance policies and commercial airline policies. And it wrote the first policy for space travel. In modern times, Travelers is a Fortune 500 company, with an iconic red umbrella logo. In 2012, it sued the NFL in order to protect players from brain injury. And, as of 2014, Travelers also sells insurance in the UK, Ireland, Singapore, China, Canada, and Brazil.

Claims Process

File a claim with Travelers.
If you’ve filed a claim, you can view your claim here.

Travelers has a fairly extensive claims process. When reporting your claim, Travelers will first ask you for the following information:

  • Your contact information
  • The name and contact information of any other involved parties
  • Your policy info (if available)
  • The type of loss you are reporting (auto, home, etc.)
  • The date the incident occurred
  • A description of the loss
  • A description of any injuries

A Travelers customer service rep will document all the details of the incident. Next they'll provide a claim number. Then they'll assign your claim to a Travelers claim professional.

After reporting your claim, the professional will call and ask you more questions about the incident. Then they'll discuss with you the terms of your insurance policy. For auto claims, you’ll set up a time for the claims professional to come and assess the damages in person.

All claims are different, so the amount of time it takes to settle a claim varies. Travelers agents and claims professionals do their best to make sure your claim is settled as quickly as possible.

Finally, the claims professional will determine whether or not your policy will cover the damages. From there, you can expect to receive payment either immediately or very soon following the settlement.
