History

Seattle’s Hawthorne K. Dent founded what is now known as Safeco Insurance in 1923. It was first called s the General Insurance Company of America. Over the years, “The General” spread its success across the country and down the West Coast.

In 1953, the company added a branch called Selective Auto and Fire Insurance Company of America, otherwise known as SAFECO. The key to the company’s success lied in its use of computer automation tools. The company later changed its name to Safeco Corporation.

Safeco has been a part of Liberty Mutual Insurance since 2008. Its focus today is personal insurance. But it still offers a comprehensive mix of coverage and policies to families seeking the best protection possible.
