History

Retired farmer and insurance salesman George Jacob Mecherle started State Farm in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1922. His dream was to build an insurance company that specializes in auto coverage for farmers and is owned by policyholders. Before long, the company expanded into other types of insurance. Today it offers over 100 products.

The company’s motto, “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there,” may be its most iconic aspect. Here’s a fun fact: the State Farm jingle was written by Barry Manilow in 1971. It was covered by Weezer in 2011. Its cornerstone products are auto, life, and fire, which make up the three circles in its logo. The company also sponsors a number of sports teams, arenas, and universities.
