Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company began life as the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation in Columbus, Ohio, in 1925. By 1926, it had 1,000 policyholders. In the 1930s, it started selling car insurance policies across the eastern US. Shortly thereafter it expanded into other kinds of insurance. The company’s name was changed to Nationwide in 1955, and in the decades that followed it lived up to its name by offering insurance products throughout the US.

Today Nationwide has over 30,000 employees, is on Fortune’s list of best companies to work for, and has received a 100 percent rating on the Corporate Equality Index every year since 2004. Despite that growth, it hasn’t forgotten its roots. Nationwide brought Columbus an NHL team, a Children’s Hospital, and a Zoo. They are also the official insurer of the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2009, Nationwide became the first US insurer to provide a free iPhone app for its policyholders.
