Kemper Insurance was founded in 1990 as Unitrin Inc. In 2002, Unitrin purchased insurance lines from Kemper Insurance, which was based in Chicago at the time. From there, Unitrin acquired the rights to the Kemper name and officially began operating as Kemper Corporation.
