Erie Insurance was established in 1925 by H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford in Erie, Pennsylvania. After three years in business, Erie expanded to a second office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Initially, the company started out only offering automobile insurance, but then expanded its inventory in 1940 by adding fire insurance, followed by inland marine insurance in 1954. The Pioneer HomeProtector Program was introduced as Erie’s first homeowners policy in the early 1960s, and by the end of the decade the company had added life insurance as well. By 1977, Erie was the largest auto insurer in the state of Pennsylvania.
In the last five years, Erie Insurance has hit many milestones as a company. It was named one of the Top 40 Customer Service Champions by J.D. Power and Associates in 2011, and by Forbes Magazine as one of America’s most trustworthy companies in 2014. In 2015, Erie celebrated having five million policies in effect and being in business for 90 years.
