History

Ironically enough, the story of how AIG came to be what it is today all began in China. In 1919, American Cornelius Vander Starr decided to start a general insurance agency in Shanghai. The agency was called American Asiatic Underwriters (AAU), and it expanded across China and eventually across the world.

In 1923, Nelle Vander Starr joined the Shanghai company and later became its first female executive. Three years later, the first US office named American International Underwriters (AIU) opened in New York City. By the end of the 1930s, the company’s headquarters had relocated to there from Shanghai. Almost 30 years and many new international office locations later, AIG became a publicly traded stock in 1969.

Nowadays, AIG is a successful insurance enterprise that assists many countries and its peoples when disaster strikes. AIG has provided aid for Hurricane Katrina victims as well as for Japanese communities affected by the earthquake-tsunami disaster in 2011.
