This set a basis for us to look into how one major accident affects insurance rates for these top and bottom five ranked cities

Michigan drivers likely know they pay the most for auto insurance in the country with a clean driving record at an average rate of $1,571 per year for minimum coverage, or $2,280 for full coverage. So, we asked ourselves how an accident involving bodily injury affects insurance rates in Michigan for the top 25 most populated, best and worst driving cities versus a driver with a clean record.

In our analysis, a common theme that we found is that one accident dramatically increases rates by an average of 43% or $1,917 statewide. This equates to an average extra payment of $160 per month. Accidents can stay on your record for two years, meaning an accident can cost you $3,834 over that period.

To get this data, we evaluated over 170,000 Michigan insurance quotes from the 25 most populated cities from drivers using QuoteWizard.com after January 2020. We ranked the worst cities by the highest rate of incidents and best cities by lowest rate of incidents. Incidents included accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs and citations.

To get insurance rates, we analyzed quotes from 37 insurance companies in Michigan for the top five best and worst driving cities. We considered a full coverage policy with and without an accident. Rates with an accident are based on those which involved bodily injury, and rates with a clean record have no accidents. Average rates are based on non-binding estimates provided by Quadrant Information Services. These rates may vary.
