State and City Car Insurance Guide

Use our state and city guide to learn about the car insurance requirements and laws unique to your state, city, or hometown.

United States Map

Insurance requirements, rates, and risks can vary dramatically from one city or state to the next. These differences are not necessarily obvious or intuitive. For instance, Florida only requires drivers to carry $20,000 worth of bodily injury liability coverage on their car insurance policies. But Maine requires $100,000 worth of bodily injury liability coverage.

The vehicle theft rate in Detroit in 2012 was a whopping 1,626 vehicle thefts per 100,000 residents. But in Los Angeles, it was a much lower 392 per 100,000 residents. Iowa has the 3rd lowest average car insurance rates of any state in America, but neighboring Wisconsin has the 7th highest.
