The company began with only six employees and 90 insurance agents, and since then has grown exponentially. In 1970, Mercury wrote $1 million in premiums in a single month. However, it wasn’t until the late 1970s that the company wrote its very first auto insurance policy. That’s also when Mercury became the first insurance company in the industry to incorporate a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to combat insurance fraud.
Over the next few decades, Mercury continued to grow and increase revenue. By 1997, it reached $1.08 billion in sales. Today, Mercury has more than $4 billion in assets. George Joseph still plays an active role in ensuring the company’s success, even at 90 years old.
